PRIVATE SECTOR FUNDING AGREEMENT

On 15 July 2009, the French ambassador in Jakarta and the Indonesian Finance Minister signed a FASEP Private Sector SUpport Fund agreement to draw up the integrated master plan for the public transport system in metropolitan Bandung, the country's third-biggest city, after Jakarta and Surabaya, which has a population of 2.5 million, and over 6 million in the metropolitan area.

The assignment carried out by SNCF International involved a comprehensive study of the existing rail network in Bandung and its surrounding area, and of other urban transport networks. The study aimed to ensure improved development and optimisation of urban public transport and intermodality between all these modes. It will also help the authorities develop their urban transport policy and a programme of work spread over the next 30 years. The study was carried out under the aegis of France's DGTPE Treasury and Economic Policy Department and saw close cooperation between everyone involved, notably at the level of the metropolitan area and with the Bandung Institute of Technology. A team of 16 SNCF International experts began this assignment on location in mid-2009, and will submit their final report in April 2010.

The aid illustrates France's desire to step up financial cooperation with Indonesia in priority areas such as transport, while simultaneously showcasing the know-how of French enterprise.
