On 18 April 2008, a technical assistance contract for Level 4 maintenance was signed with Korail, the South Korean rail operator. The agreement followed a call for tenders issued in January 2008 involving technical assistance for repairs to mechanical components on KTX (Korean Train eXpress) High Speed trainsets.
To meet Korail's needs, close to a dozen SNCF experts from the Rolling Stock Division were seconded to South Korea. Based at the Goyang facility in suburban Seoul, they helped to draw up the first maintenance manuals and trained personnel. In parallel, SNCF International trained around 50 Korail agents in France.
The new contract enabled SNCF International to maintain a presence in South Korea and allowed the SNCF Rolling Stock Division to showcase its High Speed technology know-how. This is a contract from operator to operator, with no intermediaries, signed in SNCF International's core business area.
